Defeat

A project that began in the Typography and Layout course at the Faculty of Design in Bielefeld, and was continued at the Faculty of Applied Arts in Belgrade. The book “Old Man and the Sea” was created as a personal challenge to myself, to make something general, like the now classic novel “The Old Man and the Sea”, into an abstract concept broader than the work itself. That is why, instead of illustrations, the book is filled with digital collages, which play with associative motifs and the airy atmosphere of the novel. As a continuation of the illustrations in the book, a puzzle follows, in which the viewer is allowed to play with the motif of the wild sea from the novel, with an emphasis on the feeling of hopelessness in the situation. Thanks to the abstract, associative motif, this puzzle has no “correct solution”, and is “finished” the moment the observer gives up completely – just as in the novel Santiago’s hunt for the great swordfish is finished only after the old man’s spirit comes to terms with the loss.
